New Atlantis
''New Atlantis'' is an incomplete utopian novel by Sir Francis Bacon, published posthumously in 1626. It appeared unheralded and tucked into the back of a longer work of natural history, ''Sylva Sylvarum'' (forest of materials). In ''New Atlantis'', Bacon portrayed a vision of the future of human discovery and knowledge, expressing his aspirations and ideals for humankind. The novel depicts the creation of a utopian land where "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit" are the commonly held qualities of the inhabitants of the mythical Bensalem. The plan and organisation of his ideal college, Salomon's House (or Solomon's House), envisioned the modern research university in both applied and pure sciences. Publication history ''New Atlantis'' first appeared in the back of ''Sylva sylvarum'', a rather thorny work of natural history that was published by William Rawley, Bacon's secretary, chaplain and amanuensis in 1626. When ''Sylva'' was ente ...

New Atlantis (micronation)
New Atlantis was a micronation formed by Leicester Hemingway, the brother of Ernest Hemingway. The "island", a bamboo raft off the coast of Jamaica, was established as a constitutional republic on July 4, 1964. History In 1964, Hemingway constructed a raft and had it towed off the coast of Jamaica, nearest to the community of Bluefields. The raft was primarily composed of bamboo, steel, iron piping, and rock. It was anchored on a shallow ocean bank with an old Ford engine block, and measured . At the time, the area was considered international waters. On July 4, 1964, Hemingway established New Atlantis as a republic, claiming the area around his raft. He wrote the constitution with a typewriter, and copied it almost verbatim from the Constitution of the United States. He argued that his raft was technically an island and based his sovereignty on the Guano Islands Act of 1856. He claimed the unoccupied half of his raft was United States territory, while the other half ...

Penguin Island (novel)
''Penguin Island'' (1908; french: L'Île des Pingouins) is a satirical fictional history by Nobel Prize-winning French author Anatole France. Plot ''Penguin Island'' is written in the style of a sprawling 18th- and 19th-century history book, concerned with grand metanarratives, mythologizing heroes, hagiography and romantic nationalism. It is about a fictitious island, inhabited by great auks, that existed off the northern coast of Europe. The history begins when a wayward Christian missionary monk lands on the island and perceives the upright, unafraid auks as a sort of pre-Christian society of noble pagans. Mostly blind from reflections from the polar ice and somewhat deaf from the roar of the sea, having mistaken the animals for humans, he baptizes them. This causes a problem for The Lord, who normally only allows humans to be baptized. After consulting with saints and theologians in Heaven, He resolves the dilemma by converting the baptized birds to humans with only a few ...
